INITIAL STORY BY SHELLEY

I watched on the wall for minutes and heard the woman's voice calling out to me. 'I want you to sit by my feet or I will chant some 1verses and then you will have a new friend' I didn't know what to say, I couldn’t help but glance at her confused. She started crying. 2'I am sorry.' 3

I watched on the wall for minutes and heard the woman's voice calling out to me. 'I want you to sit by my feet or I will chant some 1verses and then you will have a new friend' I didn't know what to say, I couldn’t help but glance at her confused. She started crying. 2'I am sorry.' 3 Her voice drifted away. I was the wood of the wall, the dust of the plaster. The woman and the others becoming indistinct, unimportant. 4 No more noticeable than the furniture, the bookshelves, or the ancient portraits around them. Everything was still and the same. 5 Suddenly and painfully I was drawn back to the woman's words. 'Hear me, hear me,' she sobbed. 'Hear me and come.' 6I felt a sense of pure dread circle through my body and the world continued to grow from there. 7 She casted a magic spell on me,I could feel the evil spirits circling through my body as I slowly drift away into the spirit world.8 Her voice grew distant, though no less compelling. 'You will find that which we seek. You will return it to us. The Shame of the Other.' 9 The voice grew more demanding despite the distance. I faded further into the nientaltro - the space between - hunting shadows. 10I slowly stepped towards the shadow, watching the creature step out of the way. 'Hello there,' I said as I began to slowly 11stagger towards the shadow. It was then that I awoke. 12 I was sweating and confused. I remember their demands and the strange words they used, but I no longer knew what they meant. 13 How can I kill a shadow? What or where is 'nienaltro?' And what was that horrible figure I saw, the Shame of the Other? 14
